Turkey has developed a very sophisticated drug tracing system over the course of the last several years, starting in 2009. All drug packages entering Turkey must contain a 2D Datamatrix barcode, and all cases must contain linear barcodes. These barcodes must be applied by the importer or the manufacturer. Package barcodes must encode the GS1 GTIN, Unique Serial Number, Lot Number and the expiration date. Additionally, this packaging date must be written by the manufacturer or the importer into a government repository. When dispensing drugs to patients, pharmacists must scan the barcode on each drug and place a verification request with eat repository. Any change of ownership must be documented in the government repository as well. Turkey does not, however, require aggregation data.
