Many countries have their own unique serialization requirements. In the United States, the serialization requirement is phased in with increasing difficulty over the 10 years. The first deadline of January 1, 2015 has requirement for product trace, illegitimate and illegal products handling, trading partners, and record retention. The next deadline is November 27, 2017 requiring the saleable unit to carry a 2D Datamatrix bar code and the case can carry a 2D or linear barcode. After that, 2023 is the year of interoperability where true serialized track-n-trace.
